Molly Goddard and her husband, Joel Jeffery, know a thing or two about bedroom comfort. The couple run the brand Desmond & Dempsey, which sells luxurious pajamas that are hand-painted, super cool, and incredibly cozy. But despite all their knowledge of bedroom loungewear, Molly and Joel needed a refresh in their actual bedroom decor. So they called in an expert from Farrow & Ball for a color consultation. Via Zoom, the couple walked through the space and their vision. Molly tells us just how the small updates made a major impact. 

“Our bedside tables are our own,” says Molly. “Mine is always a mess, overflowing with magazines and trinkets. Joel’s has a single book and lamp. It was really important to us that it felt as good as it looked.” Clever: How did the project come together? Molly: Like all projects, this was a real labor of love and it took time (and patience)—but it was ultimately carried along by our vision to create a calm haven to chill out in at home. The amazing Tiffany from Trove (who is a creative g-e-n-i-u-s) kitted us out with this delicious headboard, which really pulled the whole room together. What was the process for the color consultation and then implementation? We started our consultancy talking about the light in our bedroom. Patrick from Farrow & Ball took time to understand when we spent the most time in our bedroom, and how the light changed through the day. It was obvious that he had spent a lot of time looking at the 101 references I had sent him and then picked a color palette that would achieve the mood we were after. Looking at the website, I would not have known the Shaded White could be so warm, but Patrick was spot on and the colors have done everything he told us they would do. More than just the color, Patrick gave us a very handy DIY floor suggestion and spent time helping us complete the look.

“The chair and lights were picked up from Kempton Market,” says Molly. “The frames are of things that we love and tell our stories. I particularly love the Mexican piece of tin I picked up in a market at Oaxaca and then had framed elaborately back in London.”  What were some of the inspirational elements/vibes? The brief for the bedroom wasn’t easy. We wanted calm, but didn’t want boring. Joel loves minimalist midcentury and I love a Mediterranean maximalist. We weren’t afraid of color but spend our days surrounded by a lot of print and a lot of color so were excited by the idea of coming home to something softer. We wanted the mood in our bedroom to be light, calm, intimate, easy. We kept to this in the framework (the floors, curtains, room color) and then added color and texture through pieces we had collected over the years.  What paints did you use? Both from Farrow & Ball: Mouse’s Back for the skirting and Shaded White for the walls.

“Our collections are full of loved accidents and intimate mementos,” says Molly.

The inspiration for the space was creating a mood to be light, calm, intimate, and easy. What other elements were used aside from the paint?

• The lights were made from vintage fans I found at Kempton Market
• Linen from Tekla, Zara Home, and John Lewis

Is the design process similar to the one you use for Desmond & Dempsey collections? Yes, it begins in chaos and *usually* ends in calmness—it also always starts with an adventure and a scrapbook full of ideas and pictures. Like our collections, though, it is a really intimate process and we try to focus on the feeling rather than the final look. For example, I taped a picture of Verbier (that I had also scribbled all over) next to Joel’s bedside table one day so I didn’t lose it, but he loved it there so we kept it. When we were “almost” finished, I thought one of the walls looked too bland, so I painted a big canvas bright pink to remind me of our day visiting Luis Barragán’s home in Mexico. The plan was to get a new piece to put there, but actually, we both love the pop of pink now.

Desmond & Dempsey doesn’t just carry pajamas; the brand has robes, slippers, eye masks, slippers, and underwear too. What is your favorite part of the newly designed space? The bed. The bed. The bed. Did we mention the bed?! Aside from the bed, we also love the nook as you walk into the room. The photos and artworks reminding us of our travels, Joel is mighty proud of the fans he turned into lights, the chair that you sink right into.
